The G7 declares a recovery plan for girls’ education

National governments need to take action on the world’s education emergency

As the world — notably girls — adjusts to what could be years worth of setbacks to their education, the G7 announced its new policy, Girls Education: The Heart of COVID-19 Recovery and Unlocking Agenda 2030.

The blueprint to help millions of girls from low- to middle-income countries access quality education comes at a pivotal time. COVID-19 has left children and girls around the world extremely vulnerable to child marriage, abuse and violence as they spend more time helping at home and less time in school. The G7 acknowledges the high risk this poses for girls now, and when the pandemic ends. Among other targets, it’s calling on the international community to ensure…

  • forty million more girls are in school by 2026 in low- and lower-middle-income countries
  • twenty million more girls are reading by the age of 10, or by the end of primary school, in low and lower- middle-income countries by 2026

These benchmarks are set to align with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals to create a better world for all by 2030.

We agree the time for change is now. We call on all governments to help support girls and education systems recover from the pandemic. Children and girls deserve access to quality education, gender equality and a safe environment, so they can reach their dreams. As part of the Canadian International Education Policy Working Group, we’re working to push this agenda forward through support from all G7 leaders.
