Concerns about grain production grow in India following low rainfall

Find out more about this latest challenge in one of Children Believe’s countries of operation

Farmers in northern and central parts of India are facing a difficult growing season this summer due to low rainfall. And concerns are raising that the country, which is a big rice exporter, could see a drop in grain production and a rise in inflation, as a result.

So far, Indian farmers have planted crops on 61.19-million hectares of land, an 11.6 percent decline from a year earlier. Meanwhile, rainfall is seven percent below average, since June 1, the typical start to rainy season, reports Reuters.

At Children Believe, we help provide life essentials such as food rations and meals to the most vulnerable children and communities of India, especially as many struggle through challenges brought on by the pandemic.
