Edward “Ed” Blackmore left a mark on the lives of the many people he encountered in his life. As a husband, father, grandfather and educator, the messages of love and respect his family received after his passing on March 19, 2025, paint a picture of a life well lived.
“Ed was a real man who shaped many lives with his teaching, goodness, and faith,” explains Irene, his wife of 59 years. “He was a funny man, but behind his jokes he was a guy with a great heart. He loved his family, his church, his friends, and his students.”
That close connection to the people around him was a primary theme of his life, which shone through the many tributes from his children, family and past students and colleagues at his recent funeral.
Ed’s family shared with us about what an inspiration he was to everyone through his eternal support and encouragement. And as a 25-year child sponsor with Children Believe, it was also clear that his care for others had no bounds.
His faith was an important part of his life, and he served in his church and sang in the choir for many years. His daughter Michele describes how Ed was a devoted father to her, her brother Christopher and Ed and Irene’s foster daughter Teresa.
“As a father, he always encouraged us to try new things and supported us in achieving our goals,” she says.
Christopher says growing up with a father who was so gifted in many pursuits, it was inspiring to have someone with this much wisdom and resourcefulness throughout his life.
“Dad was a man of many interests and talents that people got to experience firsthand,” says Christopher.
“He was musically inclined, enjoyed sports and travelling. However, many friends, students and acquaintances didn’t realize how handy Ed was. He was a natural mechanic, curious, and could figure out how to fix anything. He really could have done anything as a career and with his life.”
A teacher and Vice Principal at Regina Mundi College, a Catholic secondary school in London, Ontario for most of his career, he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and students alike. Remembered for his passion for music, travelling and learning about different cultures, hockey and a wonderful sense of humour, Ed left an impression on all who knew him.
Michele describes many long weekends and holidays when the boarding school closed that he brought home an international student who didn’t have a place to go. Ed became a substitute father-figure for many students as they were away from home at boarding school.
“He genuinely cared about them and their well-being,” she says. “After he retired, he continued to stay in touch with many colleagues and students until his death.”
